About Us
The Near North Makerspace is a community-based digital creation and fabrication space operated by Near North Mobile Media Lab (N2M2L), an artist-run centre supporting digital artists, filmmakers, and creators in Northern Ontario. The Makerspace provides access to professional media equipment, digital fabrication tools, skill-building workshops, artist residencies, and public programming. Rooted in experimentation, collaboration, and community impact, the space supports artists, youth, community groups, and creative entrepreneurs in developing new skills, testing ideas, and bringing creative projects to life.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Makerspace Technician to join our team for a full-time, 1-year paid internship based at the Near North Makerspace in downtown North Bay. This role is ideal for someone who is technically curious, resourceful, and comfortable learning as they go. You do not need to know every piece of equipment already, but you do need to be confident in teaching yourself new tools, troubleshooting problems, asking good questions, and helping others learn in a patient and supportive way.
The Makerspace is a growing environment, so the work may shift from day to day. You might be maintaining equipment, supporting a member with a project, preparing for a workshop, researching how to solve a technical issue, helping with equipment rentals, or assisting with a public event. We are looking for someone who can adapt, work well with a small team, and bring a calm, practical approach to problem-solving.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain, organize, and troubleshoot makerspace equipment to ensure it is safe, reliable, and ready for use.
- Learn new equipment, software, and processes independently, using manuals, tutorials, online resources, peer support, and hands-on experimentation.
- Provide patient, hands-on technical support to artists, adult learners, youth, and community members working on creative projects.
- Assist users with different levels of experience, including people who may be new to digital tools, fabrication equipment, or creative technology.
- Support the planning and delivery of workshops focused on makerspace equipment, digital media tools, and creative production processes.
- Create user-friendly guides, signage, checklists, and resources to help people use equipment safely and independently.
- Coordinate technical logistics for events and programs, including the 48HR Filmmaking Challenge, workshops, screenings, and community activities.
- Conduct regular inventory checks, track equipment condition, and schedule preventative maintenance.
- Track usage trends, user feedback, common technical issues, and maintenance needs.
- Oversee the N2M2L equipment rental program, including bookings, check-outs, returns, inspections, and basic user support.
- Work collaboratively with staff, artists, facilitators, and community partners to support a welcoming and well-functioning space.
What You’ll Gain
- Real-world experience working with digital media, fabrication, and creative technology equipment.
- Practical skills in troubleshooting, equipment maintenance, documentation, and user support.
- Experience supporting adult learners, artists, youth, and community members in a low-barrier creative environment.
- Opportunities to build confidence with a wide range of tools, including 3D printers, scanners, laser cutters, cameras, audio equipment, editing systems, and other digital media technologies.
- Experience working as part of a small, collaborative team in a growing community arts organization.
Who You Are
- Curious, practical, and excited about creative technology.
- A strong self-directed learner who can research, test, troubleshoot, and teach themselves what they do not already know.
- Comfortable learning new equipment and software quickly.
- Patient and supportive when helping others learn, especially adult learners and beginners.
- Able to explain technical information clearly without making people feel intimidated.
- Organized, reliable, and able to follow through on maintenance, inventory, and documentation tasks.
- Flexible and able to pivot when priorities change.
- Comfortable working independently while also communicating well with a team.
- Respectful, collaborative, and committed to helping create a welcoming space for artists, youth, adult learners, and community members.
- Familiarity with makerspace tools, digital fabrication, media production equipment, or creative software is a strong asset.
- Experience facilitating workshops, supporting learners, or working in community programs is an asset.
