About Us

Near North Mobile Media Lab (N2M2L) is an artist-run-center for digital artists, filmmakers, and creators in Northern Ontario. We provide access to professional media equipment, skill-building workshops, artist residencies, and host public events. Our new project, the Near North Makerspace, operating in partnership with Art Fix of Nipissing, expands our focus into digital creation and fabrication, with an emphasis on experimentation, collaboration, and community impact.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Makerspace Technician to join our team for a full-time, 1-year paid internship based at the new Near North Makerspace in downtown North Bay — a creative hub for artists, makers, youth, and community members.

You’ll help keep our equipment running smoothly, support users as they bring their projects to life, and assist with hands-on workshops and events.

What You’ll Do

  • Maintain, organize, and troubleshoot makerspace equipment to ensure safety and reliability.

  • Provide hands-on technical support to users working on creative projects.

  • Assist in planning and delivering workshops focused on equipment and digital tools.

  • Coordinate technical logistics for events like our annual 48HR Filmmaking Challenge.

  • Create user-friendly guides, signage, and resources to support independent use.

  • Conduct regular inventory checks and schedule preventative maintenance.

  • Track usage trends, user feedback, and maintenance needs.
  • Oversee the N2M2L equipment rental program: manage bookings, check-outs/returns, and inspections.

  • Contribute to social media marketing and outreach for the N2M2L rental program.

What You’ll Gain

  • Real-world experience working with fabrication and digital media equipment.
  • Skills in public programming, workshop facilitation, and community support.
  • Hands-on learning in a collaborative, creative environment.

Who You Are

  • Curious, organized, and excited about creative technology.
  • Comfortable working independently and troubleshooting gear.
  • Confident working with artists, youth, and community members of all experience levels.
  • Familiarity with makerspace tools (e.g. 3D printers, scanners, digital media) is a strong asset.
  • Experience facilitating workshops or community programs is a bonus.

Eligability

This is a paid internship opportunity. Eligible candidates must be:

  • New entrants into the work force, transitioning to a new career, or unemployed, or underemployed who are entering a new field
  • Have not previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship
  • Are at least 18 years of age
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
