Virtual Resident Artist/Intern for DGTL Creator North

OVERVIEW

DGTL Creator North is launching an online, media-arts focused creativity space supported by programming facilitators and guest artists. Offering a range of virtual opportunities such as hang-out and study spaces, art showings and making sessions, DGTL Creator North responds to the creative interests of youth participants through one-on-one artistic mentoring and workshops, as well as by fostering peer-to-peer collaboration and support.

Our goal is to connect with youth by working within their existing digital habits, allowing us to build a sustainable relationship of trust with them and their families. Using Gather.town and Discord as our communal platforms, we are able to create spaces for collaborative creativity and digital experimentation.  

The Resident-Artist-Intern will divide their time between developing their own artistic practice and working virtually with DGTL Creator youth by delivering workshops and hosting open mentoring/work sessions based on their general area of expertise.

EXPECTATIONS

This is a 20 week virtual hybrid residency/internship, designed around a 20 hour week. The Resident Artist/Intern can expect to spend 10 hours a week developing their own skills and artistic practice, and will receive a total of 20 hours of mentorship with artists skilled in candidate’s area of interest. The Artist/Intern will be asked to spend 5 hours a week developing workshops to be offered within DGTL Creator. They will deliver a 2 hour workshop every other week in one of the platforms DGTL Creator uses, as well as offer 2 hours each week of open working/mentoring sessions for youth who are creating in, or exploring the candidate’s area of expertise. They can also expect 2-3 hours of meetings a week.

ELIGIBILITY

We are looking for emerging artists working in the field of digital art, with a focus on AR , VR, interactive technologies, 3D modelling or game design (including Roblox). Artists should also have an interest in web-based learning, and an affinity for working with youth.

  • Must be an emerging Canadian artist, between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship.
  • Must have completed post-secondary studies (artists located in Nunavut, Yukon or NWT are not required to meet this criterion)
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada (either a citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status);
  • Must self-identify as underemployed (i.e. employed below your level of education, holding part-time employment, or in emerging fields with few jobs);
  • Priority will be given to residents of Ontario
  • Priority will be given to Indigenous people, racialized people, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

 

RENUMERATION

The accepted artist/intern will be put on the payroll and receive a total salary of $10,400 which will be paid bi-weekly throughout the 20 week period.

DURATION & STRUCTURE

Accepted artists will be informed by October 22

Artist Residency will run for 20 weeks between Nov 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022.

  1. An outline of a the project or line of inquiry you plan to focus on during the residency (max 500 words).
  2. A short biography including your relevant digital skills (250 words)
  3. An artist statement (250 words)
  4. Contact information that includes your location, email and a phone number. You may also include relevant website information and project links
  5. Relevant supporting material (no more than three projects, in progress or realized)

DGTL Creator North is a project of the Near North Mobile Media Lab (N2M2L). The Near North Mobile Media Lab actively promotes media arts access for all artists, regardless of age, class, gender, sexual orientation, race or ability. We provide the tools that media artists, students, and media arts audiences in Northern Ontario need to produce, present and enjoy all forms of contemporary media art. We envision a thriving media arts community in northern Ontario that produces innovative work, has access to contemporary presentations, and is an active participant in a national discourse by overcoming regional limitations.
