Internationally Recognized Inventor and Mentor Joins N2M2L to Support Newcomer Youth
BayToday has published an article spotlighting our New Voices Co-Design Lab, an eight-week creative media workshop series we’re launching for newcomer and refugee youth in North Bay and the surrounding communities
The article highlights Kelvin Doe, our new Creative Media Facilitator. Kelvin is an internationally recognized young inventor from Sierra Leone whose work as a teenager gained global attention after he taught himself electronics and built functioning batteries, generators, and even his own FM radio transmitter from discarded materials. His story has been featured around the world, including at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
We’re excited to have Kelvin leading this program at the Near North Makerspace, where he’ll be supporting newcomer youth ages 12 to 19 as they explore storytelling, photography, video creation, zine-making, and digital design. The workshops begin at the end of January and will run in four cycles throughout the year.
We recently held our first co-design session in late November, where youth helped shape the topics and activities they’re eager to explore. We’re grateful for our partnership with the Northeastern Ontario Multicultural Centre (NEOMC) for helping connect newcomer families with the program.
