ICE FOLLIES 2012: Anaamimikom

Ice Follies 2012: Installations, community engaged workshops and events from February 18th – March 10th, 2012 on Lake Nipissing, Ontario.

Over the past decade Ice Follies has become a signature event for both North Bay, and the North-Eastern region as a whole. Ice Follies appears to the visitor as a strange assemblage of dwellings and structures placed across the ice along North Bay’s waterfront. This eccentric community of artworks and architectural creations echo the community of ice fishing shacks found elsewhere on the lake. Ice Follies 2012 will be the fifth biennial of site specific multi-disciplinary artwork to take place on Lake Nipissing.

This year’s title “Anaamimikomiing” meaning “Under the Surface” or “Sous la surface” was chosen because it represents the efforts behind the scenes to make Ice Follies 2012 more community oriented and engaging. With artists travelling from across the country to work alongside of local artists, community members and coordinators we hope to present a unique arts experience on Lake Nipissing that everyone can enjoy. For up to date information, artist bios and more please visit icefollies.ca.

ICE FOLLIES is supported by the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.

New Funding Opportunity for Emerging Female Filmmakers in Ontario

Octavia Films has launched a Short Film Grants Program to assist female filmmakers in Ontario between the ages of 18-30. This new organization is based in Toronto, Ontario and aims to provide opportunities for women filmmakers and encourage them to choose filmmaking as a career.

The Short Film Grants Program awards grants to directors and writer/directors to help with production expenses for short films. Grants are awarded at three  levels: $500, $1,000 and $2,000. Selection is made based on the overall quality of the proposal. Octavia Films will never exclude a film from consideration based solely on genre or content, with the exception that the films cannot be documentaries.

These grants are intended for emerging filmmakers with a limited track record who can demonstrate a sound knowledge of the craft and show strong potential for future artistic achievement. The grant can be used for any stage of the filmmaking process. For this program, a short film is defined as a film of less than 10 minutes with a budget of no more than $5,000.

The initial grants application process runs from December 1, 2011 to February 1, 2012.  Winners will be notified and funds awarded by March 9, 2012.
